catchy like the clap

Ok, so I'm thinking I should finally get around to listening to this AdmiralConquistador fellow, as I've heard such good things. So I start up this track, and I'm thinking "hmm... not bad, not bad..." Then, after a minute or so, I realize that the melody has been chewing away at the catchiness-center of my brain (if there is such a thing... as a brain... XD). And I don't mean a gentle gnawing; this thing is devouring in a way characteristic of only the most original and tastefully awesome melodies. Yes indeed, the notes are very well chosen, but I think it's the rhythms you used with those notes that really push this song into kick-ass mode. The drums are just kinda there... nothing too special, but while that would normally annoy me, they do go very well with the rest of the song, to the point where I'd even say more variation might have taken away. So overall: perfection? I think so. A well-deserved 5/5

AdmiralConquistador responds:

Haha, this is a fantastic review.

I'm glad that you've been hearing things about me... I didn't know that people were talking! I feel like I've written reviews like this before, as they are what give me the most glee when I read them; original and inventive ways of leaving high regards is brainchocolate. I agree with you on the rhythms; that's really what makes this beast come to life, and yea the drums were simplistic, at best, but were meant only to amplify the bassline, and the song really didn't need to be any more crowded than it already was. Well, again, thanks for the review/5!

wicked.

aw, c'mon... why not do the whole song? I was enjoying it... and then it just stopped. And I generally dislike the beastie boys, so that's saying something. Great drums, not so sure about the synth... also, it sounds like there's a bit too much compression with the bass drum and whatnot. Still, highly-enjoyable; great stuff.

Nostrap responds:

well all the vocals are in there. i guess i couldve just added some more instrumentals. and ya all the bass stuff could be completely messed up for all i know since ive been mixing out of shitty headphones. thanks for the review.

nice

Now this is more my style... however, it's still a bit repetitive. The drums, however excellent-sounding they may be, could use some variation; even the best drumloops get a little old if you don't throw in a fill here and there. Same goes for the melodies. Otherwise, you'd have a seriously kick-ass song here. Don't get me wrong, though; it's still quite good.

snayk responds:

Glad you liked it :)

Yeah, as with most of my songs, this one is pretty repetitive. There's only one variation from the main melody, but it's all I came up with.

The main distorted drums have two different patterns, but I added percussion on top of that.

Thanks for the review!

good stuff

I'm not much of an expert on house music, but... well, there was a tad too much repetition here for my taste, mainly in the main melody/bassline. The drums could've also used some variation... Other than that, great job; good synths, drums, samples, production and whatnot. I'll give you a 9, since I have the feeling that house music is supposed to be a bit repetitive, and I'm not one to knock points because of genre...

snayk responds:

To be honest, I don't know much about the conventions of House music either, but I've heard it's extremely repetitive. Either way, I always manage to have repetition :P

I really whipped this one up fast, and the main melody really is just a typical dance beat. Same with the drums; they're very typical of dance music.

I'm assuming the middle of the song is more House than the rest, and it's probably my favorite part because I love the beat.

Thanks again for the review :)

word.

I was thinkin', "hmm... pretty good stuff... I can see why he has all these downloads," but then came the slap-bass, and I was like, "holy shit! wtf? that's so friggin' awesome!!" 'cause it was all funky and such. but then the slap bass went away, and I was sad. The end.

not bad at all

The chorus sounds amazing. I just thought I'd say that before putting out some criticism. Your voice, while better than most, sounds rather weak throughout most of the song. Because of the chorus, I know you can do better, so I'd suggest maybe doing many different takes on the vocals until you have a perfect version of every section, mixing those perfect sections together into the final song. Who knows; maybe it could be improved simply by doubling the vocal track. If not, maybe voice lessons would be of great interest to you, because the natural talent is definitely there. During the bridge or whatever, when the vocal sound quality goes down... yeah, don't do that. I know it's supposed to sound lo-fi, but in this case it really kinda punches a hole in an otherwise well-produced song. (by the way, what are you using to record the vocals?) As for the music itself, it's very well-composed (I see that you're a music major), but it's a tad conventional for my liking. The drums in particular; generally I dislike hearing synth drums passed of as the real thing, but I understand it can be difficult to get a real set, let alone to record it. As for the lyrics, they're decent enough, and that's a lot coming from me; I'm very very picky when it comes to lyrics. Overall, a very good effort, with room for improvement (but then again, there almost always is!).

Setu-Firestorm responds:

This song was recorded sometime in early January of this year (2006). I hadn't had vocal training until recently, like in the past couple months. So, needlesstosay, I just recently learned how vocals should be done.

Also, I kinda have to use synth drums because I will never have a real set, neither will I be able to play one, so I am optionless in that regard.

It doesn't matter in the long run because I only make rock songs for fun; most of my heart's effort is put into orchestral scoring.

nice

Something tells me you're not quite new to this whole audio thing... very nice work! good melodies, good production, good structure... I would've liked to have heard a little more variation in the drums, though.

Jiao-Zhang responds:

lol. And AGAIN with the drums =p I'll say it again, I got new drums samples that are MUCH better than the presets ones in Fl. Anyways, thanks for the review!

good stuff

I actually really liked this! ...that is, until about the 5th time it repeated itself, at which point it started to get a little boring. I can definitely hear the industrial, but I can hear the hip-hop too. On the whole, this sounds very distorted, very dirty, and I love it. Keep up the good work- but try to change things up every once in a while.

great drums

if I were judging, this one would go in my top 3. nice work. yeah, it's a bit repetitive... but sounds so good, it doesn't matter. I almost didn't even notice the horrible melody.

TheAmateurAnimator responds:

Cool, thanks.

niice

sounds like you went a tad overboard with the compression... even so, excellent work. this track flat out rocks. 'nuff said.

Oh Yoshimi, they don't believe me, but you won't let those robots eat me...
